Operator Connect vs Direct Routing — which is right for your business?
Two ways to connect Teams to the phone network:
Operator Connect — Microsoft-certified carriers (including Telstra, Optus, and others) connect directly to Teams through the Microsoft admin centre. No on-premises hardware required. Set up and managed entirely in the cloud. Simpler to deploy and maintain — ideal for businesses that want the fastest path to Teams Voice with minimal complexity.
Direct Routing — Connects Teams to any PSTN carrier using a Session Border Controller (SBC). More flexible: use your existing Telstra, Optus, or third-party SIP trunk agreement, potentially at lower per-minute rates. Supports complex call routing, hunt groups, IVR, and integration with on-premises telephony during a migration. Ideal for businesses with an existing carrier contract, complex call flows, or those migrating from a legacy PBX in stages.
Mycelium 365 recommends the right approach after reviewing your existing carrier agreements, user count, call volume, and any legacy PBX dependencies. Most Australian SMBs under 100 users go with Operator Connect for simplicity. Businesses with existing SIP trunk agreements or complex telephony typically use Direct Routing.
What Microsoft Teams Voice includes
- Teams Phone licence provisioning and assignment
- Number porting — DDIs, hunt groups, and main business lines, keeping all existing numbers
- Calling policy configuration — who can call where, international dialling controls
- Auto attendant and call queue setup, replacing IVR and reception routing
- Voicemail configuration with transcription
- Emergency calling compliance — Australian location-based emergency service requirements
- End-user training so your team is confident from day one
- For Direct Routing: SBC deployment and carrier SIP trunk configuration
Replacing your PBX with Microsoft Teams
Most Australian businesses still running a physical PBX — Cisco, Avaya, NEC, 3CX, or a hosted provider — are paying for hardware maintenance, per-seat licensing, and a separate phone system administrator. Teams Voice eliminates all three. The cutover process: Mycelium 365 configures Teams Voice in parallel with the existing PBX, ports numbers in a single overnight window, and decommissions the PBX once all users are live on Teams. Typical cutover for a 20–100 user business: 4–8 weeks from engagement to go-live.
Reliable connectivity underpins call quality — Mycelium 365 also provides managed business internet with QoS configured for Teams Voice traffic.
Microsoft Teams Voice licencing
Teams Voice requires a Microsoft Teams Phone licence in addition to a standard Microsoft 365 licence. Teams Phone Standard is available as an add-on (approximately $11/user/month) or is included in Microsoft 365 E5. Mycelium 365 manages Teams Phone licencing as part of its Microsoft 365 NCE licence management service — no markup on Microsoft licencing, billed monthly, scaled up or down as your team changes.
For Operator Connect, PSTN call charges are billed by the carrier. For Direct Routing, call charges are billed by the SIP carrier directly — often at lower per-minute rates than Operator Connect.
Teams Voice for multi-site Australian businesses
Teams Voice is cloud-based and location-independent — a user in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, or working from home is on the same phone system with the same DDI. Multi-site businesses get: a single phone system management interface (Teams admin centre), per-user calling policies regardless of location, shared call queues and auto attendants across all sites, and one bill for the phone system layer. This replaces the complexity of managing a PBX at each site or paying for a hosted multi-site telephony solution.
Teams Voice and Microsoft 365 managed services
Teams Voice is most powerful when it's managed alongside the rest of the Microsoft 365 environment. Mycelium 365 manages Teams Voice as part of its Microsoft 365 managed services — meaning licence changes, number adds and moves, call policy changes, and troubleshooting are all handled by the same team managing your email, devices, and security. No separate telephony support contract required.
Teams Voice management is included in the Modern Workplace managed package and Mycelium 365's managed packages from $95/user/month. Contact Mycelium 365 for a fixed-price proposal.
