For the past few years, workplace AI has largely followed the same model: ask a question, receive an answer, then decide what to do next.
Microsoft Scout changes that model.
Scout is Microsoft's first Autopilot agent — an AI application designed to remain active, understand the context of your work and take actions across Microsoft 365, your browser and local device. Instead of simply helping you draft an email or summarise a document, Scout can carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf.
That distinction matters. It represents a shift from AI as an assistant to AI as an operational worker.
Preview status: Microsoft Scout is currently available through Microsoft's Frontier preview program. Features, licensing, availability and capabilities may change before general release.
What is Microsoft Scout?
Microsoft Scout is a desktop AI application for Windows and macOS that can interact with both cloud services and local resources. Where Microsoft 365 Copilot works largely inside Microsoft's cloud, Scout is installed on the device and operates with the context of the work happening there.
Based on Microsoft's current preview documentation, capabilities include:
- Reading and editing files
- Searching local workspaces
- Running shell commands and executing scripts
- Working with development tools
- Controlling a browser and navigating web applications
- Reading Microsoft 365 data
- Working with email and managing calendar activity
- Interacting with Teams
- Working with OneDrive and SharePoint
- Managing Microsoft To Do items
- Working with meetings
- Operating scheduled or automated tasks
Scout does not have unrestricted access to everything on a device or tenant. Sensitive actions may still require user approval, and what an agent can reach depends on the permission model, the workspace it has been given and the administrative configuration applied by the organisation.

What does Microsoft mean by an "Autopilot"?
Microsoft uses "Autopilot" to describe a category of agent that can keep working with limited supervision, rather than responding to a single prompt at a time.
To be clear: Microsoft Scout's "Autopilot" agent category is separate from Windows Autopilot, which is Microsoft's device provisioning service for deploying and configuring Windows endpoints. The two are unrelated despite the shared name.
An Autopilot agent in this sense:
- Has its own identity
- Operates within defined permissions
- Can continue working without repeated prompts
- Maintains context across a task
- Can act across multiple systems
- Can operate in the background
- Remains subject to organisational policy and security controls
That last point is where most of the work sits for IT teams. An agent that holds an identity and can act over time needs the same governance discipline applied to any other privileged account.
What can Microsoft Scout actually do?
Scenario 1: Meeting preparation
Scout could identify an upcoming meeting, review relevant emails and Teams discussions, find related SharePoint files, retrieve previous meeting notes, prepare briefing material and surface outstanding decisions.
Scenario 2: Project coordination
Scout could review outstanding tasks, identify approaching deadlines, look for stalled decisions, gather relevant documents, update SharePoint Lists, prepare status information and schedule follow-up activity.
Scenario 3: Administrative work
Scout could review an inbox, organise or manage rules, coordinate meetings, find available rooms, work with To Do items, search files and share documents subject to existing permissions.
Scenario 4: IT and development work
Scout could examine a codebase, run scripts, execute tests, apply patches, run command-line tools, review failures, interact with browser-based platforms and automate repetitive workflows.
The exact capabilities available to an organisation will depend on Microsoft's preview release, licensing, administrative configuration, permissions and approved models.
Scout extends beyond Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 Copilot traditionally operates predominantly within Microsoft's cloud environment. Scout bridges cloud services, local devices, browser applications, local files and command-line environments.
That breadth is what makes it useful — and it is also what expands the security boundary. The more an AI agent can do, the more important its identity and permissions become.
Microsoft Scout makes identity the new AI perimeter
Autonomous agents are fundamentally different from passive AI assistants. If an agent can read email, access files, change documents, execute commands, navigate websites, run scripts, manage information and act over time, then the organisation must treat it as an identity with privileges — not as a feature.
Practically, that means revisiting:
- Least privilege across accounts and applications
- Microsoft Entra ID configuration and privileged role assignment
- Conditional Access policies and MFA
- Privileged Identity Management for just-in-time elevation
- Device compliance and managed endpoint controls
- Microsoft Defender coverage and alerting
- Data Loss Prevention, Microsoft Purview and information protection
- SharePoint and OneDrive permissions
- Application governance, logging, auditing and change control
AI governance cannot be separated from identity governance.
Why Microsoft Intune matters
Microsoft currently documents Intune configuration as part of the Scout deployment process, which places device management directly on the critical path for any pilot.
Intune supports controlled deployment, device compliance, configuration policies, an approved device posture, application management and a clear boundary between corporate and unmanaged devices. Microsoft Scout and Work IQ
Work IQ is Microsoft's context layer — the part of the platform that helps AI understand organisational work: people, roles, projects, priorities, communications and institutional knowledge.
Richer context makes agents more useful, but it also raises the stakes for data quality, permissions, SharePoint structure, Microsoft 365 governance, information lifecycle and correct identity configuration. If your Microsoft 365 environment is messy today, AI will not magically make it organised.
The hidden prerequisite: Microsoft 365 hygiene
Organisations preparing for autonomous AI should review Entra ID, user accounts, privileged accounts, Conditional Access, MFA, SharePoint permissions, OneDrive sharing, Teams governance, Intune enrolment, device compliance, Defender, Purview, data classification, legacy applications, shadow IT and Microsoft 365 licensing.
AI amplifies both good governance and poor governance. A managed Microsoft 365 environment with clean permissions and consistent policy is a far safer place to introduce agents than one that has grown organically for a decade.
What Australian businesses should do now
1. Do not deploy autonomous agents without governance. Establish who approves agent use, which workloads are in scope, and how exceptions are handled before anything runs unattended.
2. Review identity first. Tighten privileged roles, Conditional Access and MFA, and remove standing access that no longer has an owner.
3. Clean up data and permissions. Address oversharing in SharePoint and OneDrive, and classify sensitive information so agents inherit sensible boundaries.
4. Secure endpoints. Ensure managed devices use Microsoft Intune, Defender, compliance policies, supported operating systems and encryption.
5. Identify suitable workflows. Start with controlled, repetitive and measurable processes — meeting preparation, reporting, administrative coordination, project updates and IT automation. Avoid beginning with highly privileged or business-critical workflows.
6. Establish monitoring. Ensure agent activity can be reviewed, audited and investigated after the fact.
Where Microsoft Scout fits in the broader AI strategy
The Microsoft AI stack now spans Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, Copilot Studio, task-specific AI agents, Microsoft Scout, Work IQ and Azure AI services. These are not interchangeable: Copilot Chat assists a person, Copilot Studio builds bounded agents, and Scout executes multi-step work on a device.
Most organisations are heading toward a mixed environment of humans, assistive copilots, task-specific agents, autonomous agents and traditional automation. The role of an AI strategy and a clear technology roadmap is to define which type of worker performs each workload — and what controls apply to each.
Is Microsoft Scout ready for production?
Microsoft Scout remains a Frontier preview. Features may change, requirements may change, licensing may change, availability may remain limited, and not every workload should be moved into production immediately.
That is not a reason to ignore it. The important development is not whether every organisation should deploy Scout today. It is that Microsoft is signalling where workplace AI is heading.

Future IT operations will increasingly involve managing human users, devices, applications, service accounts and AI agents side by side. Agents will need identities, permissions, policies, monitoring, lifecycle management and security controls, just as people and devices do.
